The Natural makes a sweet return
By Brian Doolittle. Filed in Blogroll, Cardinals |I still feel very tingly. What I witnessed at Busch Stadium on Thursday night will always stick with me. It’s easy to recall – in general terms – great games, odd occurrences and special performances. But it is rare for a specific sports moment to be so impactful that it still permeates your thoughts, dreams and behavior the following day. That you can recollect the entire episode in your mind as if it occurred in slow motion. Hoping for a HR from Ricky Ankiel seemed implausible because it would just be too good to be true. But it happened!
Here’s my personal setting: my good friend Will, a lifetime Cardinals fanatic and well-known sports blogger, flew in to STL from New York for a weekend visit. The plan was to hang out at bars and crash at my house since he had a night to burn before his weekend plans were to begin. Then word circulated about Ankiel’s call-up. After a few email/text exchanges, we decided to look into going to the game. Then my wife, Amanda, came through like a champion with 4 awesome (free) seats, just a few rows from the field along the third base line. Despite Will’s NYC flight being delayed for over 2 hours because of the previous day’s weather chaos, we eventually got to the game while missing the first 3 innings. We met up with another old friend, a sports fan and a non-Patriot, and took our seats. Ankiel looked overmatched in his second and third ABs, but the 3-run bomb he whacked was a great piece of hitting as he adjusted to a well-placed, off-speed pitch. We could not believe it. Busch went nuts, the dugout went wild, there was a curtain call, numerous phone calls (one to Brad) took place and the night was instantly cemented as an all-time sports memory. I’m ready for an encore!

Yes, I received the call from Brian while I was sitting discontentedly on a barstool at Gilhouly’s, my watering hole of choice. As I talked to Brian, with Johnny Cash on the jukebox and the bar already becoming overwhelmed with smoke, I could hear the clamour across the state spilling through the tiny speaker of my cell phone. After hanging up, I found myself feeling unreasonably surly, so I walked out on three-quarters of a pint and went home and went to bed by nine o’clock, maybe earlier. I woke at three in the morning and watched Godfather I and II in their entireties.
