Finding relief in the NBA

It was not a real tough decision for me to skip the Cardinals’ first weekday afternoon home game on Tuesday. I did have to be at the office, though since I work downtown I can usually manipulate my schedule as needed. But I did not really have the time to spare and am thankful I did not have to endure one of the worst games imaginable – good weather aside. From the two errors in the top of the first to the final offensive whimper in the ninth, this was awful. It does not take much complex analysis to see what the problem is. St. Louis is last in the NL with its 29 extra base hits and .650 team OPS. Of course, an entire team cannot stay cold so we’ll have to wait another month before extrapolating too much. Cardinals starter Anthony Reyes really frustrated folks with his 50-pitch first inning on Monday, but he got through the next 4 innings in fewer than 50 pitches. Makes me think his 8-day layoff was an issue, along with his inexperience. Again, no need to overanalyze just yet.

A nice fact from today’s radio broadcast: Jimmy Edmonds’ Tuesday start was his 1,000th game as a Cardinal, making Jedmonds just the 28th player to play 1,000 games for St. Louis.

Brad’s latest Stat Guy reminded me of something. The local Golden State Warriors broadcasts have been using a running Win Expectancy graphic. It is the same concept as baseball, though its applicability remains in question. But I like their idea. They do not reference it until the final quarter, but will then say something like “When an NBA team is ahead by 5 points at home with 3 minutes left they win 83 percent of the time.”

I can’t wait to watch tonight’s Warriors game! I already know the Clippers result, but have Golden State-Dallas safely nestled on my DVR. First, I need to get through the Cavs-76ers. Philly has been using an assortment of obscure players, one of which is named Bobby Jones. I’m hopeful we’ll see Caldwell Jones and maybe even Clint Richardson, or Marc Iavoroni.
