Or at least it’s supposed to be. Somewhere out there are headlines and blog posts that are headlined something like this: “Finally, the GAME”, the inference being that after two weeks of scrutiny and omnipresent hype, there will actually be a football game played between the New England Patriots and the New York Giants.

I am happy to report that I once again successfully avoided almost all Super Bowl hype. It’s not hard. I don’t watch ESPN. Most Web sites that I check in with are niche-oriented and it’s a fluke if they mention the game. The ones that do, it’s very easy for me to just ignore it. My only real exposure was the day last week when I was working the copy desk and was assigned to read some of the Super Bowl material coming into the Star. Other than that, for me, the Super Bowl may as well be a PBA event.

That’s not to say I’m not interested in the game itself. After all, this is an NFL season that I started off by watching every game for the first eight weeks. Then the NBA started… But the point is, it’s the game itself I’m interested in and not all of that crap that surrounds it. There is so much crap that I’m not sure I’d ever go to the Super Bowl even if someone paid my way. Well, unless the Broncos are there.

So I am looking forward to the game. No big party plans for me. This will be the sixth consecutive Super Bowl that I’ve watched from the bowels of the Kansas City Star. It’s not so bad. Super Bowl Sundays are invariably slow news days. It’s very easy to get the paper out and still watch the game.

I cannot see the Giants staying with New England. This will be one of those lopsided results, 1980s-style, with the AFC now in the dominatrix garb. I look for the Patriots to throw some seriously-confusing looks at Eli Manning and for whiny-faced lil’ Eli to throw about 8 interceptions. Moss will have a huge day; Brady will be the MVP. And 19-0? It’s a ridiculous accomplishment, unfathomable to the extent that I think it’ll take most of us 10 years to fully appreciate what we’ve just seen.
